Sports:Hall Athletics Events
2 Lap Sprint
In track events, participants run in
straight lines that span the lwength of the sportshall, making turns at
each end using the reversaboards. In this way, laps are completed in a
similar way to a swimmer in a swimming pool. However, all events start
and finish in a line in the middle of the hall. the equivalent to two
lenghts of the hall is considered to be 1 lap.
The Start
Only standing starts are permitted in sports:hall races. there is no
"set" command, just "on your marks" and then the firing of a starting
pistol. In under 11's races a whistle is usually used to start the
races in stead of a starting gun.
Turning
The runner decellarates on approach to the reversaboard and when they
are within striking distance of the board their body begins to turn,
followed by the quick placing of the front foot on the surface of the
board. The runner completes turning their body, bpushing off the board
and accelerating towrads the other board at the other end of the hall.
Longer Races
For races that are over three laps, it is reccomended that an official
with a set of numbers stands at one end of the sports hall to show you
how many laps you have got left. Normally, a bell will be rung when
each runner has got one lap left to go.
Technique Hints
1. For the best turning technique, you should hit the board below the
coluredstripe in the center. This helps you to achieve a lower centre
of gravity and better balance through the turn
2. only ever place one foot on the board, never two. Never climb or run
up the boards, as this can be very dangerous.
3. Try and keep your back foot on the fllor as you turn, and use it to
pivot the rest of your body around as you turn on the board.
